This was the first proper duathlon I've done apart from the Clowne ones...
Ok, so it was a very wet and windy morning for the sprint duathlon organised by Broxtowe council and Broxtowe triathlon club. The
days before I was in a dilemma as to what shoes to wear...this is true for any typical women.....I decided I liked my road bike
shoes too much and to wear my hard trail racers....only, it wasn't a hard trail....all the rain had turned the paths around Colliers
Woods to a muddy mess with some of it resembling a cross-country. I started off at a good pace, with a lady over taking me in
the first part of the run but I kept within 100 m of her throughout. I managed a fair T1 (run to bike transiiton) and over took her
again on the bike soon out of transition. I thought my legs were tired as my gear was so low...I realised then, the two loops of the
out and back course was on a bit of a gradient and in a head wind going up. About half way up, I was over taken by a different
female competitor. Over the course of the bike leg, the three of us to and froed for prime position, I managed to take it on the
return downhill section only to realise that she was literally right on my tail. After a poor transition I can only blame to lack of
practise of putting soggy shoes on with soggy socks with cold hands and calf cramp, I was ready for the run. She was ahead of
me, but only be about 200 m, I thought I'd never catch her, but over the next 1,500m, I felt myself gaining more and more until the
last 150 m on a grassy uphill to the finish were I pushed myself passed her and through to the finish line.
Overall, it was a fairly well organised race, ideal for beginners, although they should be prepared for the few hills. It was cheap to
enter with no prizes, but for someone wanting to have a go at duathlon, like myself, it was great fun although I was filthy and my
bike looked as though it had just done a cyclo-cross race.
No pics I'm afraid as I was on my own and Lance Superdog doesn't know how to use my camera yet :-)
