On Sunday 21st November Andrea, Mel and Gemma entered the Walesby Whole Hog at Walesby Scout Camp near Ollerton. This is a team adventure race which follows a 10k off road course interspersed with obstacles most involving mud, water or both.
The first 5k did not involve many obstacles and gave the field a chance to thin out giving the Clowne team a chance to get ahead of the main group. This proved an advantage when reaching the obstacles as no queuing was involved.
After an arduous first few kilometres through the forest the first river crossing loomed. The briefing at the start clearly stated that there would be no swimming involved, only wading. Clearly the course had been designed by someone who was 6ft 5 as Mel plunged up to her neck at the first crossing and had no option but to swim across, the rest of the team followed suit.
The course continued over rough fields and forest trails incorporating scrambling under tarpaulin. Being vertically challenged was an advantage at this point if you ran/stumbled along side a taller competitor who lifted the tarpaulin for you!
Next came the scramble nets which were not as high or wobbly as anticipated and were conquered with relative ease. Next came the log carrying challenge which involved team work and communication to negotiate a course through the woods. Once completed another kilometre to the most dreaded (by Andrea) challenge, the "caving challenge". This involved crawling on your hands and knees in pitch darkness through a series of twisting tunnels. Again strong team work and support ensured we completed the obstacle without incident or panic attack apart from the chap in front of Mel who insists his bottom was groped!
A final few kilometres and a few more dips in the river and the end was in sight. Clowne ladies team managed First Ladies Team and eighth place overall which was a great result for a first attempt at this type of event.
A quick change into dry clothes in the car park treated us to the sight of many a bare bottom. Surprisingly and unusually we hung around for the presentation and were rewarded with a trophy and well stocked goody bag for First Ladies Team.
Overall it was a great day, a challenging and fun race with a really good atmosphere and I am sure Clowne Ladies will be back next year to reclaim their title!!
Many thanks to Peter for his support as photographer and general fountain of knowledge in regards to climbing walls and the operation of megaphones!
