For the first time, Clowne entered a team in the Round Rotherham Team Relay race.  It covers a distance of 50
miles and finishes at the Wath-on-Dearne Leisure Centre, following as close as possible to the boundary of
Rotherham District Council.  Twenty teams took part.

On a bright chilly October morning, ideal for running, Ged Naylor took the first leg, a distance of 17.4 kms from
Wath to Grange Park golf course near Kimberworth.  With a time of 1hr-19mins, we were a creditable close 7th.
Second runner was Paul Sadler covering his 10.3kms leg from Grange golf to Treeton in 50mins and we had
moved up to 6th place.
Simon Sleney’s stage was 12kms, taking him from Treeton, through Rother Valley Country Park and on to Harthill
in a time of 48mins and moving us up to 4th.  The 4th stage saw Andy Ward move the team  into 2nd place with a
time 0f 31mins for his 9.4kms., from Harthill to Woodsetts, passing over Lindrick golf course.
Steve Battle, who had only arrived home the day before from running 101 miles in America, took stage 5,
Woodsetts to Old Firbeck, a distance of 9.1kms in 35mins, keeping us in 2nd place.
The short 6th stage from Old Firbeck to Maltby, passing Roche Abbey site, was run by Andy Padley, a distance of
6kms run in 26mins and still maintaining our 2nd place.
Dan Keeling took over in Maltby for his 12kms stage to Old Denaby, keeping us in 2nd place in a time of 53mins.
The eighth and final stage saw Dave Keeling cover the 5.1kms from Old Denaby back to Wath-on-Dearne Leisure
Centre, like a man possessed in 26mins to hold on to 2nd place for the team.  A supreme effort from all runners.

Although we finished 30mins behind the eventual winners, Kimberworth, it is worth noting that we also finished
17mins in front of  Sheffield A.C.   Killamarsh/Rotherham Harriers and Handsworth were further behind.

A great team performance and spirit to achieve 2nd place for our first time in this event.  Everyone gave 100%
effort and enjoyed the good conditions and a well organized event.  Let’s see if maybe next year, we can enter two
teams and give it another go.
